Today’s Readings: Joshua 7:16-9:2, Luke 16:1-18, Psalm 82:1-8, Proverbs 13:2-3
Psalm 82 is one of many places where the Bible clearly speaks about caring for those less fortunate among us. Three groups of people are highlighted here: the poor/destitute, the orphan and the oppressed. It will be interesting to watch this thread in future chapters.
3 “Give justice to the poor and the orphan;
uphold the rights of the oppressed and the destitute.
4 Rescue the poor and helpless;
deliver them from the grasp of evil people.
These verses are a response to verse 2, which tells a familiar story where the courts favor the wicked or, in other cases, the wealthy. As we have seen throughout our focus on love and justice in the month of April, Psalm 82 is a call for God’s followers to exercise justice – to practice the principles of His kingdom.
The Psalmist concludes by crying out to God to act in justice in the whole earth.
8 Rise up, O God, and judge the earth,
for all the nations belong to you.
