Accidental death

Today’s Readings: Joshua 19:1-20:9, Luke 19:28-48, Psalm 88:1-18, Proverbs 13:12-14

I wonder if the cities of refuge that are described in Joshua are the earliest example of a society that did not treat all deaths as murders and cause for vengeance. I realize that the phrase “an eye for an eye” comes from the Bible, but I see the cities of refuge as another example of God’s justice reflected in the lives of His people. I am no lawyer, but I wonder if the concepts of 1st degree murder, 2nd degree murder, manslaughter and accidental death started here.
