Unfailing love and truth

Today’s Readings: Joshua 22:21-23:16, Luke 20:27-47, Psalm 89:14-37, Proverbs 13:17-19

Psalm 89 is about how God has designed His kingdom. Verses 14 explains how righteousness, justice, unfailing love and truth are combined in His kingdom.

14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne.
Unfailing love and truth walk before you as attendants.
15 Happy are those who hear the joyful call to worship,
for they will walk in the light of your presence, Lord.

Verse 15 tells us the impact on human lives – everyone who comes to the call to worship God. Last night I visited an event outside my hotel room in San Diego. There were hundreds of people, loud music and a generally fun atmosphere. As my wife and I walked over there, we noticed a general sense of excitement. As we got closer we saw some protesters who had warning signs about Hell, so we became interested. There were several discussions about right and wrong going on. I heard one young man quote the Bible, “Didn’t Jesus say, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself?'”

We asked a vendor outside the fenced in area and he told us this was a cannabis festival, where people could meet vendors and try products that were laced with cannabis (marijuana). One of the protestors was talking about the false love, false peace and false security that came from this festival.

I was really uncomfortable there, as we walked away, and also this morning as I think of it. These were the people that Jesus described as “sheep without a shepherd.” They were having fun and were excited to be there, but they really need to true Shepherd-King who can bring them to a joyful place of worship where there is true justice and unfailing love, a place that depends only on the perfect combination of love and justice that comes only from God Himself.
