Today’s readings: Jeremiah 39:1-41:18, 2 Timothy 1:1-18, Psalm 90:1-91:16, Proverbs 26:1-2
I almost titled today’s entry, Precious Promises, but that sounds too much like a book my Mom would take out of the library at church. The reason is that I simply love Psalm 91, particularly these verses.
14 The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me.
I will protect those who trust in my name.
15 When they call on me, I will answer;
I will be with them in trouble.
I will rescue and honor them.
16 I will reward them with a long life
and give them my salvation.”
I’m sure I heard them many times growing up, but they really hit home when I was in my first year of graduate school. I was really struggling at the time. Graduate school was difficult intellectually and emotionally – for the first time in my life, I was an average student and I was living in a place without any family. I found a small prayer group that met on Saturday nights in a neighboring dorm and started to attend. We used to share things we had read in the Bible that week and I had just read Psalm 91, seemingly for the first time. It still delights and comforts me today, but not nearly as much as it did during that crisis over thirty years ago.
