Today’s readings: Daniel 6:1-28, 2 Peter 3:1-18, Psalm 119:129-152, Proverbs 28:21-22
The story of Daniel in the lions’ den is one of the most famous of the Bible and is a frequent reference in our society. To me, the most powerful statement in the story occurs when King Darius is hurrying to find out if Daniel survived. Daniel’s response in many translations is “Oh King, live forever!” I’m not sure why that is so powerful for me.
Even as I read the story, I noted a phrase in Daniel 6:10.
10 But when Daniel learned that the law had been signed, he went home and knelt down as usual in his upstairs room, with its windows open toward Jerusalem. He prayed three times a day, just as he had always done, giving thanks to his God.
Daniel was in a habit of praying and when he prayed on this particular day (the one that got him in trouble with his scheming adversaries) he simply did the same thing he always did. May we be so consistent.
